| Independent CD Review Krister Axel Arms Around the River Genre: Rock Style: Southern Rock Born in Paris in 1974, Krister Axel is a self taught musician, poet, and songwriter based out of Las Angeles. Starting on the piano, he eventually discovered the guitar. His appealing, gravely, voice is the perfect delivery apparatus for his roots based southern rock music. "Arms Around the River" was released in 2007 and this review of it is long over due (my apologies, Krister). A collection of songs written over a period of few months in 2005, it reflects the sorrow and hope of those who have survived tragedy. Continue reading CD review. |

Independent CD Review David Rynhart The Air Balloon Genre: Singer/Songwriter Style: Acoustic David Rynhart's music is a wonderful mix of driving acoustic guitar and folk story telling, all presented with a Celtic undercurrent of power and spirituality. It's no wonder. His musical history includes forays into rock and roll, acoustic folk, bluegrass, and Celtic sounds. After recording "Almost 9 O'clock" with the Celtic band "Bohda" in 2003, he moved to Ireland where he performed as a singer/songwriter, playing rhythm guitar with "The Hot Club of Galway" Gypsy swing band.Continue reading review. Let me tell you a story. Back in 2000 I wrote a short piano piece as an emotional response to an experience I had with a very gifted pianist.I may tell you about it sometime. In any case, the work was entitled ‘Forgotten Sister.’ For those who are interested, it’s an atonal work built on a select few tone clusters. It wasn’t more than a couple of minutes long, and it took me only a few days to write. It really did come together quite quickly for me. Now, let me tell you about what led up to me thinking about all this, seven years later. How in the heck can you take Tennessee bluegrass and combine it with a Seattle grunge flavor? Adam Hill does it, and does it well. The combination is intoxicating. It's a perfect album for those times when you just want to unwind from modern complexities and return to a slower, simpler, life. Continue reading review. |

Universal Takes on Apple iTunes October 16, 2007 In an attempt to regain monopolistic control over music distribution, Universal Music has decided not to renew their contract with Apple iTunes. Instead, they want to offer their own service that focuses on delivering music through new devices that can support their new "Total Music" subscription service. They already failed trying to get customer support for their own music download services; I guess they're trying to wrestle back full distribution control through other means. I wonder what makes them think they can make it work this time? EU Give Universal the OK to Buy BMG May 22, 2007 Tuesday, European Union regulators gave Universal Music Group the okay to buy BMG Music Publishing to the tune of $2.09 billion. The EU expressed "serious doubts" about the deal's effect on online music, soothed only by the companies' plan to sell the rights to some recent pop hits. The deal would give UMG a 22 percent market share, pushing slightly ahead of current market leader EMI. |
